This allowed some audience participation, allowing them to be part of the cabaret, but of course it also meant that we had to have multiple numbers for them to choose from.ĭeciding on what numbers to include in our own particular sections was the easy part. All we had to do then was chose the songs and weren’t there a lot to choose from!ĭuring rehearsals for the show, Abbie had the great idea of having a section in which the audience gets to choose our final solos. Therefore I suggested a Webber medley and thankfully Al was up for the challenge. So despite having done three years at college, other than a few number from Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita, I hadn’t looked at another Webber musicals in any depth. For many, he is musical theatre and because of that, when it comes to auditions, no one ever wants you to sing a Lloyd Webber number. If you were to go onto the street and talk to anyone about Musical Theatre, they would undoubtedly mention Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. With You from the musical Ghost – Dance routine choreographed by Philip Watson-Smith This really fitted with the theme of the show, by taking me out of my comfort zone and allowing me to challenge myself to my fullest. I had always loved the song and the characterisation pushed me to limits that I hadn’t been to before. As soon as I started to learn the piece for my Trinity exam, I realised just how much characterisation I could put in and the character was something so far removed from anything that I had done before. I had auditioned for SUAC with this number and decided to revisit it as part of my Trinity examination material. The choice of ‘Daddy’s Son’ was made later than some of the others as it wasn’t initially in my programme. When I heard this particular version I knew instantly that I wanted to sing this number as part of our show.Ībbie and I decided to use this song as the numbers that came before this one, had pretty much all been ballads. On it’s own ‘Spark of Creation’ is a powerful, ‘shower’ number that allows the performer to explore different techniques, however by adding in ‘Our Time’, the piece develops light and shade moments and leaves it with a simplistic feel, which again connected well with our theme. It talks about exploration and starting new adventures, which is exactly what I will be doing when I leave college. It is a song that I felt fitted really well with not only the ethos of our show, but also the whole ethos of this particular year. ‘Spark of Creation’ was a piece that I knew very well, as I had previously used it through audition processes.
